Pinterest Is Violating the DSA When It Silences Comments Without an Explanation

I create Pins. I do not turn comments off. Ever. Pinterest do on 40% of my pins.

Pinterest displays the same dead-end message: “Comments are unavailable for this pin.” It does not explain why Pinterest disabled comments, what rule it believes was broken, whether an automated system made the decision, or how I can obtain a meaningful review.

That is not transparency. It is an unexplained platform restriction.

Article 17: Pinterest must explain its decision

Article 17 of the Digital Services Act requires a clear and specific statement of reasons when a hosting platform restricts a user’s content because it considers that content illegal or incompatible with its terms and conditions. The explanation must identify the restriction and its grounds, say whether automated means were used, and provide clear information about available remedies.

“Comments are unavailable for this pin” does none of that. It states the outcome while withholding the reason. If Pinterest disabled comments on my Pins under its own rules, without giving the required explanation, Pinterest is violating Article 17.

Article 20: A complaint loop is not an effective appeal

Article 20 requires online platforms to provide an effective internal complaint-handling system for covered moderation decisions. A complaint process that answers with generic templates, asks for information already provided, and never addresses the actual decision is not a meaningful review. If Pinterest handles appeals this way, it is violating Article 20.

Article 14: Platform rules cannot be enforced in the dark

Article 14 requires platforms to explain their content restrictions in their terms and conditions and to apply those rules diligently, objectively and proportionately. Users cannot understand or challenge a restriction when Pinterest will not say what rule it applied or why.

The point is simple

I did not disable comments. Pinterest did. Pinterest cannot impose that restriction, conceal the reason behind “Comments are unavailable for this pin,” and then treat an automated reply loop as a genuine appeal.

When Pinterest restricts comments under its own rules and fails to provide the required reasons and effective complaint handling, it violates Articles 17 and 20 of the Digital Services Act. Its opaque and arbitrary enforcement also breaches Article 14.

I look forward to the day the EU fines Pinterest the way they fined Google and Facebook.

Pinterest - I am coming for you!
